The benefits of physical activity

More and more slogans and messages attract our attention to this concept: moving is good for everyone and at any age.

Yet the same Ministry of Health, which has long been trying to convince the Italian population to move more and to avoid the dangerous sedentary lifestyle, still reports not very comforting numbers (here the full report): in Italy 30% of adults between 18 and 69 years of age carry out less physical activity in their daily life than is recommended and can be defined as sedentary. The situation of Italian children is not very different, as only 1 in 10 children seem to carry out physical activity adequately for their age. Is it worth insisting then? Absolutely yes.

The Benefits Of Physical Activity

Our body is not made to stay still, but to live dynamically. Physical activity must enter into our daily life, just like other needs, such as nourishment or rest. Our culture must change, which often leads us to seek comforts, to the detriment of our health. So let’s get used to choosing flights of stairs, instead of escalators or elevators, dust off our bicycles and abandon the cars, favoring healthy walks, or, if forced to move by car, try to park deliberately further away than our point arrival and we complete the journey on foot. These simple daily habits contribute to the achievement of our psychophysical well-being.

The Benefits Of Physical Activity

The benefits that are obtained from the practice of physical activity, albeit moderately intense, but constant, are many and have been scientifically proven. Movement, in general, produces the following effects:

    • improves glucose tolerance and reduces the risk of getting some forms of diabetes;
    • prevents hypercholesterolemia and hypertension and reduces blood pressure and cholesterol levels;
    • decreases the risk of developing heart disease and various cancers, such as those of the colon and breast;
    • produces energy expenditure and a decrease in the risk of obesity;
    • prevents and reduces osteoporosis and the risk of fractures, but also musculoskeletal disorders (for example back pain);
    • reduces the symptoms of anxiety, stress and depression;
    • prevents, especially among children and young people, risky behaviors such as the use of tobacco, alcohol, unhealthy diets and violent attitudes and promotes psychological well-being through the development of self-esteem, autonomy and ease the management of anxiety and stressful situations;
    • improves basic motor qualities, such as endurance, mobility, strength, but also reactivity, balance and coordination.

    Naturally, the more specific, structured, adapted to individual characteristics and carried out regularly, the greater the probability of obtaining benefits. Then it will be possible to choose between multiple activities, suggested by specialized personnel, according to your health conditions and age, but in the meantime, let’s get used to keeping our body moving in everyday life.

    Let’s get started! Because the movement must be part of our life.
